In 1860, Bishop Harding and the Cathedral Chaplain decided to establish a Grammar School within the walled city of Bombay. This small school, along with an even smaller girls school, marked the beginning of what would later evolve into the Cathedral School as we know it today. On October 1st, 1875, a Choir School was founded with the primary aim of providing choristers for St. Thomas Cathedral. Meanwhile, in 1866, The Bombay Scottish Education Society was founded. In 1881, the Society constructed a beautiful building on the Esplanade, naming it after Mr. John Connon, a prominent philanthropist and Chief Registrar of Bombay. In 1902, the Society also took over a small school run by the Wesleyan Church on Colaba Causeway, which became the kindergarten department of John Connon School until it was closed in 1920, when the space was no longer suitable.
