In 1961, a group of young mothers gathered at a waffle party in Mumbai, sipping coffee and discussing the rigid, uninspiring schools in the city. Among them were both expatriates and Indians, but they all shared a common concern—avoiding academic pressure, punishment, and rote learning for their children.
