About Visva Bharati
Visva-Bharati University was founded in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European Nobel Laureate, and was declared a central university and an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in 1951. The university’s governance includes the President of India as Visitor, the Governor of West Bengal as Rector, and the Prime Minister of India as Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor, known as Upacharya, is appointed by the President of India.
