About Acharya Nagarjuna University
Acharya Nagarjuna University derives its name and inspiration from the revered Buddhist philosopher and teacher Acharya Nagarjuna, who established an ancient centre of learning on the banks of the Krishna River centuries ago. His legacy of wisdom and scholarship continues to guide the University’s vision and mission. The University was originally established as Nagarjuna University under Act 43 of 1976 of the A.P. State Legislature, and later governed by Act 4 of 1991, which covered six universities of the state. In recognition of Acharya Nagarjuna’s profound intellectual influence, the institution was renamed Acharya Nagarjuna University through the A.P. Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004, issued by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. The establishment of the University fulfilled the long-standing aspirations of the people of the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh to access quality postgraduate education close to home. In 1976, Andhra University set up a Post-Graduate Centre at Nallapadu in Guntur district to serve the region’s educational needs. This centre gradually evolved, and in August 1976, it blossomed into the full-fledged Acharya Nagarjuna University, reflecting the academic ambitions and cultural heritage of the region.
