About National Dairy Research Institute
ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, Haryana, is one of Indias premier institutions in the dairy sector, playing a pivotal role in transforming the nations milk production through continuous research and innovation. With a legacy of over 96 years, NDRI traces its origins to the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry & Dairying, established in Bangalore in 1923 as a centre for dairy education. In 1927, Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya trained at the Institute, studying modern cattle management and engaging deeply with issues related to cows and buffaloes. Gandhijis experiences and writings on dairying significantly influenced early national policies on cattle development. Renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936, it was relocated to Karnal in 1955 and later became the National Dairy Research Institute. Its southern station continued at Bangalore, and an eastern station was set up at Kalyani in 1964. In 1970, NDRI came under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and was granted Deemed University status in 1989. 1423
