About Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University

Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) was formed in 2018 through the upgradation of the former Ranchi College under the RUSA Programme. The institution carries a rich legacy of nearly 185 years, beginning in 1839 as a Government English School established by Major J R Ousley, the British Commissioner of Chhota Nagpur. With continuous growth in academics and infrastructure, it evolved into Ranchi Zila School in 1875, later offering intermediate arts courses under Patna University by 1926. In 1946, it became Ranchi Government Degree College and was renamed Ranchi College in 1949, becoming a constituent unit of Bihar University in 1952. Postgraduate teaching began in 1951-52, marking a new phase of academic progress. In 2018, the institution entered a new era as DSPMU, honouring its long-standing contribution to education and regional development. Today, DSPMU stands as a vibrant university with a green campus in the heart of Ranchi, offering academic and extracurricular opportunities to nearly sixteen thousand students, supported by facilities such as a playground and boys hostel.
