Gujarat University was envisioned in the 1920s by eminent leaders and visionaries such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai, and several others who were committed to advancing higher education. However, the University came into existence only after India gained independence. In 1949, it was formally established under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government as a teaching and affiliating university, introduced as part of a broader effort toward decentralization and reorganization of higher education in the erstwhile Province of Bombay. Over the past five decades, seven major universities have been carved out of Gujarat University’s original jurisdiction—Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University, and North Gujarat University. Despite this division, Gujarat University remains the largest university in the state, serving the educational needs of over two lakh students enrolled across 235 colleges, 15 recognized institutions, and 24 approved institutions. The University currently comprises 34 postgraduate departments and 221 postgraduate centres, reinforcing its role as a key hub of higher education, research, and academic excellence in Gujarat.
