Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar, formerly University of Saugor, was established on 18th July 1946 by Dr Hari Singh Gour using his lifetime savings. It is the 18th university of India and the oldest and largest in Madhya Pradesh. Dr Gour, a jurist, educationist, philanthropist, and social reformer, also served as the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University and Nagpur University. The university, renamed in his honor in 1983, is located 5 km east of Sagar city, covering 1312 acres over Pathariya hills, with lush forests and a rich ecosystem. It has 36 teaching departments, 11 schools, 19 affiliated colleges, multiple hostels, and extensive facilities including libraries, canteens, banks, and research centers. Offering diverse programs including Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology, Biotechnology, Performing Arts, and Distance Education courses, the university is recognized nationally and internationally, awarded A grade by NAAC, and declared a central university in 2009.
