About Aligarh Muslim University Online
The university traces its origins to the vision and work of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a prominent Muslim reformer and statesman. In the aftermath of the Indian War of Independence in 1857, he recognized the urgent need for Muslims to pursue modern education and participate actively in public life and government services in India. Raja Jai Kishan also played an important role in helping Sir Syed establish the institution. The British decision in 1842 to replace Persian with English for government employment and as the language of the courts created widespread concern among Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. Sir Syed understood that proficiency in English and Western sciences was essential for the community to retain its social and political standing, especially in Northern India. To lay the groundwork for a modern Muslim university, he established schools at Moradabad in 1858 and Ghazipur in 1863. In 1864, he founded the Scientific Society in Aligarh with the aim of translating Western scholarly works into Indian languages, helping the community embrace Western education and develop a scientific outlook. His commitment to uplifting Indian Muslims also led him to launch the influential journal Tehzibul Akhlaq in 1870, which advocated social reform and intellectual awakening. 1508
