The University of Allahabad, established on 23 September 1887, is the fourth oldest university in India after Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. It evolved from Muir Central College, whose foundation was laid in 1873 in Allahabad, now Prayagraj, under the initiative of Sir William Muir, then Lieutenant Governor of the United Provinces. The university has played a pivotal role in higher education in India for over a century, offering quality academic and research opportunities.
