About Periyar University
Periyar University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 17 September 1997 under the Periyar University Act, 1997. Located in Salem, the University covers four districts: Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. It has been granted 12B and 2f status by the University Grants Commission and was reaccredited by NAAC with an A++ grade in 2021. In the MoE NIRF 2024 rankings, it secured the 56th position among Indian universities. Named after the great social reformer E V Ramasamy, also known as Thanthai Periyar, the University is committed to advancing knowledge guided by its motto Arival Vilayum Ulagu (Wisdom Maketh the World).
